Lana – Day 120

It’s been four months, and a lifetime.

So much has changed. Blips into my everyday consciousness are pretty much a thing of the past. Thank goodness.

My long-term memories are still gradually coming back. Stories, pictures, and even social media are helping me to hold onto those. Sometimes I remember random things and I have to try placing them in order. Things that occurred before the accident, and stuff that came after.

They can feel like little intruders into my brain. Sometimes they’re welcome. Not always.

Like remembering one conversation I had with Mikah, weeks or maybe a couple of months ago. He’d been coming around so often to see me, and then for a little while he suddenly wasn’t.

I was missing him, bad.

And I wasn’t afraid to let him know. ‘Why have you been avoiding me?’

‘I’m not,’ Mikah said with a sigh. ‘It’s just…you know we can’t do that again. You know I think the world of you, Lana, but your brother’s the chief.’

I knew what he meant—I remember, I could still feel his kiss on my lips. ‘We’ve always been friends though, haven’t we?’

And he said, ‘Always.’

I understand now why Mikah became distant for a while. But I could never let go of the want in my heart. This journey has been so much like starting life over again. Whatever “rules” existed before, they’re not as important to me now. This life is so, so fleeting.

I want what I want.

And my feelings for Mikah run so deep they’ve rooted in me.

We’re more than friends; more than family.

It’s as if we’re connected on a spiritual level.

He hasn’t said so outright, but I know he feels the same way too.

Romantic feelings aside, Mikah has been an amazing friend throughout all of this. I only wish I knew how to thank him in a way he would accept. When my thoughts spin unmanaged, Mikah has been a steadying light. My true north.

Personally, I can think of a number of fun ways to show him my appreciation.

The doorbell rings as if on cue. Speaking of…

I open the door and seventy pounds of fur leaps over the threshold and into my arms as I kneel down. Somehow Howler just knows when he’s off the clock. He greets me with a full-body hug and a wet kiss on my cheek.

“Howler!” Mikah scolds. Doggo bounds into the apartment anyway. The place isn’t huge but the full-grown German shepherd’s presence makes it feel no bigger than a shoebox. “Down.”

On that command, Howler immediately sits.

“Sorry ’bout that,” Mikah says, gritting his teeth.

“Are you kidding? I love him!” Holding the clasp of my necklace with one hand, I spin around putting my back to Mikah. “Could you help me with this, please? It’s usually easy, but my fingers are too slick from cooking oil.”

“Uh. Sure.” Mikah hands me the stack of DVDs he’d been holding. He wavers, and then I feel his cool touch on the back of my neck as he hooks the clasp. “Smells delicious by the way.
